how to destroy a hard drive

FDISK is trackable AND does not work that well. "Deleted" files leave tracks on a hard drive.

There's a program called Incinerator (System Mechanic has it, there are other similar programs out there, most likely they're free!) which will overwrite your files multiple times. Do this to your entire disk, after you've backedup and transferred everything else you need to a new hard drive.

Once you've copied everything you need to a new hard drive, clear the old drive, then DESTROY IT. An electric drill to the drive itself, which shatters the magnetic plates inside, will do the trick.

Yes, it's drastic, but it's time to pull out all of the stops.
